It was a dark and stormy night...and you're starving. Or, like I've experienced many times, you've freshly arrived in a far away country and are jet lagged like crazy. You need to eat, but don't have the energy to sit down at a proper restaurant. You saw that little fast food place down the street, but resorting to that makes you feel almost...guilty. After all, aren't you in a place with great local cuisine? Shouldn't you be eating something fabulous?
There are times when, despite our best efforts and intentions, we have to eat, but can't find anything good. In situations like this, remember, you're eating to keep going, not to satisfy some greater culinary conscience. Get a snack, grab a hot drink, sit down and plan where you go next. Turn your low blood sugar moment into a time to relax, regain your bearings, and get back on track.
There is a silver lining to your foray into foreign junk food; it's an opportunity to try something completely unknown. Locals get hungry, just like you do, and they've got to eat something. Odds are, there's a snack you've never tried, can't identify, and will never see again. Just try it!

I really like this advice - chances are that the local food for local people is far better than you think. If the place isn't littered with the corpses of past customers, chances are you'll be OK...Carpe dien ;)
There's nothing like hitting a Thai 7-11 and randomly grabbing a bag of chips...then finding out they taste like fish, shrimp, weird bbq, or feet...
Travel: it's all about the adventure..and sometimes it's even more of an adventure for your tastebuds.
I want a nice hot bag of freshly sugared churros please!
Love the churro holding a cell phone in that picture.
