Big cities have lots to see and many travelers often fall into the trap of trying to see too much, too quickly. If you're going to be staying for several days, it pays to listen to your mom's advice: don't wander too far.
As with most other aspects of travel, a little planning and forethought goes a long way. We'd suggest taking some time to plan out each day's itinerary so that you won't wander around too many areas, perhaps seeing only a neighborhood or two. Include a few rest stops, perhaps in a park, cafe, or coffee shop. That way, you won't be as likely to find yourself traipsing back and forth across the city, ending up worn out and ragged.
Always remember that you're human, not a machine. Take it easy, after all, you're on vacation!

Great advice! One great thing about traveling the world as a family, is a kidlet slows one down, which turns into a real benefit!
So often in Europe, most of the key things are all in one area, so that makes it easier. We do prefer the countryside and smaller villages though, to immerse deeper into a culture.
Still cities are fun, and in great ones we sometimes stay 2 weeks ( Paris) or a month ( Barcelona, Dubrovnik).
Sorry but I don't agree with that. What is travel without exploring it to the fullest.
Akum,
I think you may have misunderstood my point. I'm by no means advocating intentionally NOT seeing or doing things, I'm just saying that by overextending yourself day after day, you tire yourself out and don't end up enjoying what you do see.
I agree with this philosophy 100% and can say from personal experience that it is so true!
