Travel Chatter: What's Hot On The Net

The blogosphere is full of travel inspiration and ideas... here's our favorite finds from the past week.
Street Food in Mumbai

Globespotters: Snack Attack, Mumbai. Eating Safe Street Food.
Street food in Mumbai is delicious. But, it seems that some restaurants there are making an attempt to standardize and sanitize the idea of street food by setting up chains of vendors all over the city. While I'm all for the idea of making street food safer, isn't there a risk of turning them into the equivalent of McDonald's? The fact that individual vendors choose how to make the food, have a stake in making it good, and enjoy the fruits of their labors are what makes street food so enjoyable. What happens when you take that away for the sake of perceived safety?

Tim Leffel's Cheapest Destinations: Mexico City: Nicer Than You May Think
I love it when anyone goes mythbusting a location. While Mexico City may have the reputation of being unsafe and polluted, Tim's experiences prove that the reputation isn't wholly deserved. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the architecture he found, I hope that he includes it in his future posts on his visit. Check out his post to get a taste of Tim's Mexico City.

The Nihon Sun: Regional Foods in Japan: Chubu & Kansai
I'll admit that good food is the best way to get me to travel ANYWHERE. This collection of delicious regional dishes is going on my short list of must eats when I go to Japan. Which, if all the food is as good as these sound, will be soon.

Indie Travel Podcast: European Visas For Newbies
Since I live in the US, I take for granted that I can enter European countries without visas. Craig and Linda cover some great information on getting your paperwork straight and getting to Europe.

Thanks for the mention of The Nihon Sun's coverage of Japanese food. We are proud to feature a local expert who is covering the wide variety of great food that Japan has to offer her visitors.

Reading through the other links, I now want to taste the street food in Mumbai. Many of my memories of places that I have visited come through food and I believe that it is a great way to explore the local culture.

Sanitizing street food? I think we're safer eating the local food prepared by street vendors than what's in McDonald's. At least with the street vendors you're seeing what you're eating and often how its made.

I think two food vendors can co-exist. In the end, its all about pricing. If the big restaurants can match the street vendors price then there might be some issue. but i don't see that happening.
