Do you prefer a hike in the mountains or the sunny shores? Are you a nature lover or a beach bum? Why do you prefer one over the other? Do you take a side or do you remain neutral?

I'm a beach girl. I love the sand, the ocean, and the salty breeze. I guess it all stems from yearly trips each summer with my family to Rehoboth Beach, DE. It's probably the only place on earth where I can tolerate cheesy tourist activities: boardwalk fries, ferris wheels, mini golf and cotton candy. Mmmmm Grotto Pizza.

I'm fairly neutral when it comes to picking between mountains and the beach, although I'd probably lean towards the mountains. I love to go hiking and just enjoy my surroundings.
If you had asked me this same question a few years ago, I would have been unquestionably a mountain man. The beaches I'd been to on the east coast of the US are nice, but unremarkable. On the west coast, especially in Washington and Oregon, they've got stunning features, wide sandy beaches, and they're not all clogged with hotels. I do miss the boardwalks, though. Since my introduction to the awesome places, I've been swayed towards the "beach-side" and away from my previous bias for the mountains.

If I had to choose whether to live by the beach or by the mountains, I'd pick the beach. I love looking out over the endless horizon. There's something calming and meditative in watching the water. For a vacation, that's a bit harder. I used to always say beach, hands down. But our Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal last year was so fantastic that I'm not quite so sure now. Maybe the hikes this year in Central and South America will convert me to a mountains person...but I think my first love will always be the beach.

That's a very hard call. Im from North Carolina where we have the Blue Ridge Mtns and the Outer Banks, both fabulous places to play outside. I would argue that both are places to bum around, (trust me, i went to school with hippies in the mtns), as well as both are places to play hard outside, (seakayaking anyone?). I personally know that if i had to choose where to LIVE i would go with the Beach but visit... it would always be a toss up.

    Greetings from Rehoboth Beach!

Can't beat living at the beach and vacation in the mountains. I love going to isolated mountain towns in New England during the summer while all the summer visitors are here.

Check us out at CoastalSussex.com for all the goings-on at the Delaware Beaches. And we'll save some Grotto Pizza for ya!

    Both!

Maine has rocky coastlines, sort of the best of both worlds. Lebanon (and some other places along the Mediterranean) have great coastlines and mountains within an hour's (or less) reach. A running tourist selling point for Beirut is that you can go up to the ski resorts in the morning and ski or snowboard and then come back to the sea in the afternoon and relax as the sun sets.

I've gotten more into rock climbing and bouldering recently so I think I tend to lean more towards mountains, but I have always had a tendency to want to live close to the coast, wherever I am at.
