It's easy to plan a vacation, but if you're a travel addict like I am, you're always looking for a way to extend your travels. Whether it be work, study, or volunteer projects, there are many ways to feed a travel habit. How have you found ways to get out there and travel, outside of the typical vacation? Share your experiences below and help inspire others to find their way to long-term travel.
I found my excuse to travel while in graduate school studying art history (heck, my entire masters degree was an excuse to travel.) I took it upon myself to enroll in a summer program in Venice, Italy through Pratt Institute (Pratt in Venice.) For a few summer months, I got an in depth look at life in Venice, behind the scenes tours in Venice and the Veneto and excursions around the continent, including a long weekend in Berlin. It was a great opportunity to not only experience the art and culture of Italy, but to also get a taste of real life, separated from the hotels, museums, and guidebooks.

I thought you'd never ask. I spent a summer doing resort work in the Southwest. Cheap housing, cheap food, tons of employee trips, the best summer ever!! Details are on my blog: http://ummmmheyyyy.wordpress.com/2009/02/08/cheap-ass-travel/
That's a great idea, so you're heading up to the PNW this summer? We're based out of Seattle and it's beyond gorgeous here, you'll have a fabulous time.
We decided to just make our whole life about travel and have found that it is much easier, cheaper and more enriching to travel the world than live at home.
As you know, we are a family into our 3rd year of an open ended world tour and are living large on 25K a year. ( Not to mention green & immersing deeply)
So far on this trip we have been to 4 continents, 29 countries and traveled over 75,000 miles, mostly over land & used every means of transportation from Freighter ships to camels!
It is a good thing! Go for it!
You guys are great inspiration and travel advocates. Far too many people still believe that it is difficult, expensive and out of their reach to travel.
I used the grad school excuse to apply directly to a school in England (not being fluent in other languages, this seemed safest). The great thing is that once you are living in England, all the rest of Europe is a cheap flight away for a weekend getaway!
