Art, architecture and lodging in one, the Benesse Art Site in Naoshima allows you to spend the night at the museum. Designed by renowned architect, Tadao Ando, the art complex situated on a small island in Japan's Inland Sea features a luxury hotel complex and two art museums.
Nature, art, and architecture merge throughout the complex. The stark beauty of the structure is contrasted by the art selected and nature itself. Each hotel room has views of the sunrise or sunset, and the Oval complex (pictured above) surrounds a reflecting pool. Art abounds in the rooms themselves and throughout the museum and grounds with site-specific works dotting the landscape outdoors. The Chichu Art Museum, which is entirely underground, features contemporary works as well as a Monet room lit entirely by natural light. (View a complete list of artworks here.)
The rooms range in price from $300 - $900 a night. But, penny pinchers don't fear, you can still enjoy the art without paying for a room. There are a few budget-friendly options elsewhere on the island, or a day trip on the ferry from Uno or Takumatsu is not out of the question.
