Ask An Italian: Ready for Some Football

by Francesco on 06/11/2008
Every week, Francesco Serra, our good friend and expert on all things Italian, gives us perspective on Italian culture. Residing in the northern city of Padova, but being a fiercely proud native Calabrian, he brings a unique perspective on all things Italian.

Our question today for Francesco....Hey Francesco! I love soccer....I mean football. Tell me all there is to know about the Italian football! What's the best way for a tourist to catch a game? Thanks, Frank from Boston

Do you for real?? Eheh! It sounds strange from an American, at least to an Italian, because they've taught us that soccer is not that popular in the US. Anyways, I'm glad you asked, because here soccer (we call it calcio, which means kick) is part of our national culture. Not that I'm very proud of it, but, hey, there's always something to be ashamed of in every country. ;-)

In Italy we have three big teams (Milan, Juventus and Internazionale) which are the best and strongest teams in the league. So much so, that you will rarely see another team winning the title. They have the best players, usually, of the league. So, watching them playing is a strong assurance of viewing a good show. When you're in Italy and want to see a soccer match, you can go to almost any city and search for the stadium. You will surely find one, most likely on Sunday, where there will be 22 people in an underwear-like suit running after a ball... :-D
Seriously, it's fun, so give it a try!

P.S. On the 7th of this month, the European Soccer Championship has started and you can find all the news on the internet! Italy will play on the 9th, 13th and 17th of June, and if they are successful they will be playing in the final matches of the tournament! Enjoy!

No one knows a place better than a local, so we're asking our circle of friends to be our experts and answer our questions. If you'd like to become our resident expert on a city or country, drop us an e-mail.
