Eating Well While Flying

Eating well while you are flying can be a challenge. Often, you're stuck between eating barely digestible fast food at the airport or a tasteless TV dinner en route. Thank god the airlines have gotten too cheap to serve us this "food" anymore. While, there are a few healthy options in the airport itself, I've developed a few strategies that keep me eating and feeling good while I'm flying.

Where to look?
At restaurants in the airport, food choices are largely dominated by fried, packaged, and overpriced fare. Look for places that offer fresh veggies, grilled meats, and vegetarians options. I always avoid sugary, heavy food that will leave me feeling dead. On my last flight, for example, I opted for a taco salad from a Mexican restaurant, leaving the shell behind.

What about on the plane?
Even if you manage to navigate your way through airport food, you may still have to contend with the unfortunate situation of eating airplane food. What is a traveler to do? Think ahead and request a vegetarian, halal, or kosher meal. Chances are, they've been prepared in smaller batches, with (hopefully) more care.

Pack it yourself.
If you are traveling at odd times, or want to be in more control of your diet, then making your own chow is the best way to eat healthy. Fresher food can be more difficult to pack, but some recipes can be toted around for your entire trip. I loved these power bars made from a recipe at 101 Cookbooks. They taste great and the secret ingredient, espresso, gives you a little bit of a kick to help you get through the day. In addition to pre-made goodies, I often carry fresh fruit and vegetables, which keep me feeling great. They're packed with vitamins, come in their own packaging, and keep you hydrated. In fact, I often opt for packing my own meals rather than leaving myself at the mercy of the airport and airline cuisine.

If you're searching for ideas to pack on your next flight, check out this discussion over at The Kitchn. I also love these ideas from Happy Foody, whose raw travel options offer simple ideas regardless of your diet persuasion.
