Whenever you travel to an unfamiliar place, you'll likely be in the mood to sample some of the local fare. You don't have to plan your trip to the dish, but it helps to at least have an idea of what you want to try.
Singapore is a place where you can sample the best cuisine from many different cultures, without having to travel all over Asia. As a bonus, it also has some delectable dishes that are distinctly local. Before you go, get to know some of these dishes so you won't be stuck wondering what to try.

  • Roti Prata -- The Singapore version of an Indian pancake, Roti Prata is a dish that is eaten for breakfast, dessert and as a snack. You've got lots of options when it comes to acquiring Prata. There's a popular chain, called "The Best Prata Shop" or you can
  • Black Pepper Crab -- Huge, delicious steamed crabs covered in a spicy black pepper coating. If you've ever had blue crabs in Maryland, this might be right up your alley.
  • Fish Head Curry -- Just what it sounds like, but don't be scared off. The curry is wonderful and there is plenty of meat on the head and accompanied by different types of vegetables. Your best bet for this dish is to head over to Little India.
  • Chicken Rice (aka Hainanese Chicken Rice) -- As the national dish of Singapore; the name doesn't do it justice. Depending on where you get it, Chicken Rice also comes with a side of greens and another side of pork. I had a great experience at Lee Fun Nam Kee (It's all they do) but there are lots of other places to experience Chicken Rice in all its glory.
  • Rojak -- The makeup of Rojak is hard to pin down, but it's basically a fruit and vegetable salad with a sweet & spicy sauce. It's a good side dish for when you're sharing food at a hawker center, as it compliments most dishes quite well(especially spicy food!)
