More often than not, the inspiration we find on the internet is visual: tantalizing the eyes, but neglecting the other senses. This limitation is frustrating, as one of the things I love to do when I'm traveling is to just sit and listen. The animals sound different, peoples' cadence (not to mention their language) are refreshingly alien. But this overwhelming, yet beautiful, aspect of the travel experience is difficult to communicate to others. Video helps to bridge the gap, but the quality doesn't even come close to the real experience. Until I found out about the site, Quiet American, (thanks Pam!) I'd never found anyone who's captured the fleeting, the mundane, and the inspiring sounds from all around the world...and made them sound so good. So, I implore you, go and listen, but do it with headphones on.
