I know it's been a little quiet over here and I've still got loads of stories to share with you about Hawaii and St Croix. But, my eyes (and tastebuds) have been glued to the blogs and websites researching our next trip. Next week, Austin and I are packing up our bags and heading south for a good old fashioned roadtrip. We're picking up a car in Pensacola, Florida and heading west as fast as we can. Ten days later we'll be flying home from Houston, with a stop in New Orleans and wherever else we find on the way.
Our tentative plans include...eating, eating and sightseeing in between eating. We hope to try as many different types of Cajun food as humanly possible, drink some local brews and deal with the heat and humidity with the frozen, icy concoction called a snowball.
But, we need your help. If you're from or have been to Louisiana or eastern Texas or anywhere in the Gulf Coast region, please leave us your favorite dining spots and must-sees on the map above or any tips in the comments below. Don't let us miss the best boudin, beignet or brewery along the way. And...if you're in the area between Pensacola and Houston, (May 6 - 15) and want to share a meal with us, drop us a line. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

I haven't been to Louisiana in ages; only went to typical visitor spots like Acme Oyster House. But I remember eating some unusual things, like alligator sausage and catfish. And a simple platter of andouille sausage with grits was amazing (probably because they cook grits w/ lard).
Tasty, tasty lard. I am excited about grits and po-boys and for a thorough comparison of Louisiana snowball vs. Baltimore snowball vs. Hawaiian shave ice.
It doesn't get any better or more Cajun than the Gumbo Shop, 630 St. Peters St. Located right off Jackson Square this "hole in the wall" has been known for serving great red beans, shrimp etoufee and much more for decades.
Thanks Peggy, red beans and rice are definitely on my itinerary. :)
If you have time in Pensacola, stop by the Pensacola Bay Brewery for a Banyan Brown (they don't sell it...you buy the glass and they fill it for you!). Five Sisters Blues Cafe serves up true delicious Southern soul food. And don't forget the cheese grits! Grits-a-ya-ya at the Fish House are made with gouda cheese and lot of other tasty things! If you are in Pensacola long enough, I would love to meet up!
Mmm cheese grits, I get hungry just thinking about them! :)
I'll second that recommendation for the Gumbo shop off Jackson Square. It is a great place to eat.
We were driving that same drive along the I-10 towards New Orleans and stopped at a road side dinner and the waitress brought us Boodan Balls. I don't know if that is even how you spell it- but they were delicious. Try to find them- you won't be disappointed!
We had a ton of those on our trip, they are so good. Boudin is excellent!
