Gift Guide for the Urban Traveler

It's that time of year again, so we're putting together a selection of great gifts for your favorite traveler, whether they're a first-time traveler or a seasoned backpacker. Today we're focusing on the urban traveler: the museum explorer, cafe eater, and lover of all things city.

A Sigg bottle is the perfect companion when you're trekking around the city. They're durable, attractive, and lightweight, even when full. We don't leave home without it.

For the traveler who likes to eat outside a restaurant, having a good, sturdy, lightweight utensil is key. We love the the Light My Fire Spork, and think your traveler would too.

Half the fun of traveling somewhere is taking awesome photos of what you've seen. Having a tripod can make a good shot great, but who wants to lug around a heavy, clunky beast? The Gorillapod is light and can help you stabilize even the most strangely angled shot.

Besides the obvious cool-factor of the iPod touch, it has a lot to offer the urban traveler. You can tote around your media, games, and especially some cool travel apps.

When you're in the city, you don't want to stick out like a tourist. Lugging a backpack around is a sure-fire way to look like you don't belong. Why not tote around a messenger bag and look more stylish? This canvas messenger bag may do the trick.

Nobody likes having to bring along extra bags. Why not have a bag that would look good on the streets AND be a good carry on bag? We think that a Puma bag would do the trick quite nicely.

A girl's travel bag doesn't need to be a backpack. Kelly loves these oversized purses from London designer, Orla Kiely. Large enough to cram all of your essentials for the day, yet still small enough to function as a purse. While on the pricier side (this bag will run you close to $200), they are extremely durable and made of stain-proof oil cloth.

Washing clothes on the road is probably one of the least enjoyable part of any trip, but it also means you can pack lighter. Soap sheets help you clean your undies without requiring you to lug around heavy liquid cleaner.

If your favorite traveler is a budding filmmaker, consider the flip video cameras. Super compact, easy to use and now with a variety of cameras to choose from, it's a great little gadget for capturing moments on the road.

I have to admit, when it comes to taking photos on trips, I'm usually more of a digital SLR kind of guy. But there are times, especially when you're trekking around a city, where a small camera is needed. We've had great luck with Canon Powershots, so their latest, the Canon PowerShot SD1200IS comes with a hearty recommendation.

If you happen to know where your traveler is heading this next year, consider giving a membership to their favorite museum. It will save them some cash and help support a good cause. If your loved one is a vagabond, a membership at the Guggenheim might be a good choice. With outposts in New York, Berlin, Bilbao and Venice, they'll be able to enjoy an array of art for free, and bring you back a discounted souvenir from the gift shop.

Great recommendation. I especially love the idea of a museum membership. I never would have thought of that, but that's a fantastic idea for an art lover.

I heart this website. Now I want an Orla Kiely bag.....better start putting more change in the "Ben Franklin" (I was going through a box of Pickett's junk in the dreaded hall closet and found that gem....a BF piggy bank and you screw off his head to get the change out. Don't be jealous.)

love the sigg, but want to suggest checking the size for what you need. my 1.0L bottle seems a bit clunky for the plane, but it does ok. thinking about downsizing to a .6 or .75 L for travel.

the gorilla pod is on my wishlist now that i have a new camera, maybe santa will drop one off for me.

    nice list :)

I am officially in need of one of the Orla Kiely bags...nice pick Kelly! No one said you had to be unfashionable when you travel.

She has killer cute luggage too. Another great place to pick up her goods is twig, but now that she sells online it's way too easy to indulge.
