DIY Gift Guide for the Traveler

Budgets may be tight this year, but we think making a gift is better than buying one any day. If you're short on cash, but still want to spoil your travel addict, we've come up with some ideas for gifts to make for them. (Warning, sewing skills may be needed.)

Don't buy them an eyemask, make them one.
Download the free pattern from Burda and off you go. The choices are endless and you can customize it to suit your travelers style and taste.

Sew a sleep sheet.
What could be easier to sew than a huge rectangle, I mean really isn't that all a sleep sheet is? A few hems, a long stitch up the side and you've got yourself an easy gift. Get crazy with appliques or embroidery if you want to personalize it. Don't skip on quality fabric and choose something that would feel good against the skin. Here's a simple tutorial for making your own.

Make them a travel journal.
Some paper, a few tools and some time are all you need to create a personalized travel journal. Here are some tutorials from Michael Shannon and Daydreaming on Paper to get you started. We'd find some cool paper and maybe some vintage maps to create one for ourselves, but the possibilities are endless. Don't forget to make a pocket for stashing all their mementos.

Make them a First Aid Kit
If sewing is not your forte, then you can still purchase your way into a DIY masterpiece. Find a cool toiletry bag and stuff it with all the essentials they may need on the road, don't forget the bandaids!

Or...
And if you're all thumbs, there are plenty of inexpensive creative gifts to be found. Gift them with a Flickr account for all their travel photos, or let someone else do the dirty work and support handmade by buying from Etsy or Dawanda.

knitting and crocheting can be a great method for creating hand-made gifts. Gloves, hats, scarves, etc aren't too hard to pack...hmmm, you're usually wearing them. :) They are practical and depending on who makes the item they can be quite personal and fashionable. I'd rather have something like this that is hand-made than purchased from a store.
