I'm heading to NYC this weekend and it's been awhile since I've been there. When considering my transportation options, the seasoned travel advice "get a transit pass" popped in my head. But more importantly, when transit is concerned....know thy options. Sure, a tourist card may make sense in other cities throughout the world, like Berlin. But for my four day stint in New York, I discovered it's better to pay as you go.
I researched the options and dug out some prices. It's $2 to ride the subway and passes come in two forms: a $7.50 day pass or a $25 seven day pass. Nothing in between. For four days in the city, I'd have to ride the train 13 times to get my money's worth. I'm also staying with a group of ten, and chances are we're going to have quite a few people to share a cab with at times making it just as viable of an inexpensive option as the subway. So, I decided to forgo the transit pass in favor of a pay as you go option. In this case, it's more flexible and affordable. Go figure.
