Breaking The Rules: Avoid Your Gate

Waiting for your flight can be one of the most stressful parts of traveling. People are milling around and stressing, eventually spreading their worry, making you feel even more anxious. So why not wait somewhere else and break free from all those bad vibes?

Instead of immediately heading to your gate, find one in the same terminal that isn't being used, where you can sit and relax until a few minutes before your boarding time. That way, you can enjoy a more peaceful wait, minus all the pacing businessmen, screaming babies, and nervous standby fliers. You might want to sit near a departure monitor, though, so you can keep abreast of any gate changes. When it's time, you can board your flight more relaxed and ready for what's to come.

I loathe sitting at the gate! I tend to walk around the terminal perusing newstands, browsing around gift shops for nic-nac's, even if I don't plan on buying anything. I have trip alerts from the airline sent to my phone and I periodically check the monitors for updates, so I'm still paying attention. But, anything, anything! is better than sitting at the gate :)

I'd just as soon be right there and ready to board. Of course, I'm often totally oblivious to my surroundings...especially when I'm reading, and I ALWAYS bring plenty to read.

i've come to love sitting in airports. it's the one time i feel like i have to myself - free of being glued to my computer and can enjoy a good book or catching up with a trashy magazine.
