Back to the Beach: Zanzibar

"It is not worth the while to go round the world to count the cats in Zanzibar." -Henry David Thoreau

Floating to the east of Tanzania, Zanzibar is a grouping of islands well known for its spices, its monkeys (and cats), and more importantly, its beaches.

On the Sand:
Head to the north or the east of the island to the towns of Nungwi, Paje, or Jambiani for the best of white, sandy beaches on the Indian ocean. While you're there you can scuba dive of the coral reefs, swim with dolphins or watch a traditional Arab sailboat or dhow from the comfort of your beach blanket.

When the Sun Goes Down:
Hit up one of the many bars on the beach for a beer or a local favorite, sugar cane juice. Sample some of the local cuisine, this is "the spice island" so you'll find dishes brimming with flavor. Some of the dishes that really whet my appetite were batata bhaji (an Indian potato dish), Zanzibar pizza (not pizza but more like a crepe), the exceptionally fresh variety of fish, and a green mango snack spiced with chilis. With all of these delicious options, you might find yourself waddling back to your room...

When it Rains:

The capital of Stone Town offers loads of beach-free entertainment. From the eclectic architecture, open air markets, spice tours, and historical monuments. (Did you know it was the birthplace of Freddie Mercury?)

Check back tomorrow for our next beach inspiration!
