Back to the Beach: Whitsunday Islands

A group of islands off the Eastern coast of Australia, the Whitsundays offer a relaxing holiday conveniently situated near one of the greatest dive sites in the world, the Great Barrier Reef. With one look at the aquamarine waters, it's easy to see why this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia.

On the Sand: While the islands are dominated by the resort crowd, areas like Airlie Beach are still renowned as a backpacker's haven. You'll find your typical beach activities, but be aware that swimming is only safe a few months out of the year due to deadly jellyfish. Head to Whitehaven Beach for a sight to behold, with some of the purest white silica beaches in the world, you won't forget it.

When the Sun Goes Down: If you're staying in Airlie Beach and fancy a nighttime swim, you're in luck. The man-made Airlie Beach Lagoon offers you a free (and jellyfish-free) place to swim, 24 hours a day.

When it Rains:

Hop on a sailboat for an overnight trip. There are plenty of sailboat companies ready to provide you with a nautical adventure. Or, head out on the 30km Great Walk, which takes you through rain forests and gives you a chance to enjoy nature on land.
