Back to the Beach: Phuket

Located in southern Thailand, Phuket enjoys the distinction of being both its largest island and its most popular tourist destination. People flock to enjoy the sand, surf, and to party down. Although it was devastated by a tsunami back in 2004, Phuket has bounced back and remains an awesome place to visit.

On the Sand:
Most of the beaches lie on the West coast of the island where one can find a sandy spot to rest their head. Strong currents can make swimming hazardous, so be sure to mind the flag warnings placed on the beach. From the tourist-centered beaches of Patong and Kata Yai to the more quiet retreats, one can find their own version of paradise.

When the Sun Goes Down: Both foodies and party animals have reason to love Phuket. Since Phuket is so popular with travelers, it has one of the busiest party scenes in Thailand, if not all of Southeast Asia. This popularity also means that you take your pick from many different international cuisines.
But if you're like me, and want a more local taste, then you should take advantage of the multitude of food sellers available, from roaming snack vendors to more established groups of food vendors (smaller versions of hawkers centers seen all over Southeast Asia.) Sample the grilled bananas, satay, fresh cut fruit, or an almost infinite assortment of rice and noodle dishes, all without having to step foot inside a restaurant.

When it Rains:

Check out the Sino-Portugeuse Mansions of Phuket Town built in the late 19th century or if you're looking for a more spiritual experience, visit the Buddhist temple of Wat Chalong on the south end of the island. Animal lover? Get back in touch with nature at one of the animal sanctuaries or take a ride on a domesticated elephant.
