With over one hundred islands in the South Pacific, French Polynesia is home to a slice of paradise. From larger islands like Tahiti, as well as more remote locales like Bora Bora, they all allow you to bask in the sun and get it away from it all...at a price.
On the Sand:
You'll find your usual beach-time activities including scuba diving, swimming, surfing, and sand. The islands seem to be overrun by resorts catering to the honeymoon set, but a few hotels still offer affordable digs (by beach standards.) If you're inclined to enjoy gimmicks, be sure to stay in an overwater bungalow at Hotel Bora Bora or even dine al ocean at a Motu picnic.
When the Sun Goes Down:
If you're in Papeete, head down to the waterfront and grab your meal from the Tahitian version of streetfood, called Les Roulottes. Literally restaurants on wheels, they offer a range of food from crepes to pizza and allow you to sample a range of Tahitian flavor. Be sure to try the national dish of Poisson Cru, raw fish tossed with a lime-coconut dressing. Skip the resort scene, and head out for a night of real Tahitian living.
When it Rains:
If you're staying in the hub of Papeete, you'll find plenty of museums and cultural excursions. Our favorite, the Paul Gauguin Museum which has a few of his minor works and exhibits on Tahitian culture. If you're farther abroad, individual islands offer peeks into the history and nature of French Polynesia. On the island of Moorea you could hike to a waterfall or check out the tour at the local pineapple juice factory.

The French Polynesia is on the very top of the places that I want to travel to. I just wish it wasn't so expensive! All of the pictures are breathtaking.
I can't get over the colors in the top photo....I don't think I could believe that water color until I see it myself!
