Back to the Beach: Darwin

Sunset and Sailboat off Mindil Beach

Located at the far northwestern tip of Australia, Darwin is part beach town and part capital city. You can have your cake and eat it too, as the beaches are pristine and the city is hoppin'.

On the Sand: Long stretches of clean beaches and fabulously blue water make Mindil and Casuarina Beaches a great place to put down your towel. Almost any aquatic activity is available: you can swim, surf, dive, or fish to your heart's content...most of the time.
While Darwin's beaches are beautiful, they also pose more dangers than your average beach. If you encounter the deadly box jellyfish or saltwater crocodile, getting a bad sunburn or looking at fat Europeans will seem like a walk in the park. Not to worry though, as long as you don't get in the water from October through May, you should be safe.

Old School Clown Game At Mindil Beach Market

When the Sun Goes Down: Gotta love that street food. Darwin has more than its fair share of excellent Asian cuisine, much of it easily available on the street. However, if you're looking for something a little closer to the beach, Mindil Beach Market offers you a more central location for your cheap dining pleasure. Or if you're in the mood for a few cold beverages, Darwin won't disappoint. After soaking up some strong sun all day, cold beer couldn't sound any better.

Tawny Frogmouth in Australia

When it Rains: If the weather isn't agreeable, or you get over-roasted at the beach, then why not change it up a little and see some of Australia's unique wildlife over at Territory Wildlife Park? From sugar gliders to giant saltwater crocodiles, you can experience these guys up close and personal. In the case of crocs, maybe too personally... If fauna isn't your style, I highly recommend taking a journey to Arnhemland and seeing Aboriginal culture in its birthplace. If you don't have time to make the trip, consider viewing some Aboriginal art at the Aboriginal Fine Arts Gallery in Darwin.

Check back tomorrow for our next beach inspiration!
