Ask An Italian: Vacation

by Francesco on 07/24/2008
Every week, Francesco Serra, our good friend and expert on all things Italian, gives us perspective on Italian culture. Residing in the northern city of Padova, but being a fiercely proud native Calabrian, he brings a unique perspective on all things Italian.

Our question today for Francesco....I've heard Italians go on vacation for the entire month of August. What about you, where are you going? What will you be doing? Will you spend the whole month of August at the beach?

Have a question about Italy? Send Francesco an e-mail and we'll have him answer your question here.

Italy stops in August, that's the truth! :) If you're looking for a grocery store, a little shop, or whatever in your local area then, get ready to walk a lot or to take the car and go to some large mall, because store owners here want to go to the beach just like everyone else!
But I think something will change soon, due to the economic situation around us. No more can people take long vacations, nor go far from their living place, so I think eventually August will become a normal month.

As for me, I will just take a couple of weeks off in the first half of August, and will be going to Follonica, which, they say, has one of the best beaches in Italy; I've never been there, so I can't wait to get there! Will I be back completely tanned? Hope so! Maybe I could publish some photos, when I come back... we'll see ;-) On the second half of the month I will probably take the week ends to go somewhere else, but that is yet to be decided!

I'd be very curious to know what my American friends will be doing on their vacations! ;-)

Are you going on vacation in August? We're curious, so let us know what you're up to in the comments...

No one knows a place better than a local, so we're asking our circle of friends to be our experts and answer our questions. If you'd like to become our resident expert on a city or country, drop us an e-mail.
