Being Calabrian is big deal, indeed, especially for the food. :) We actually have a poor cuisine, as Calabria is a region which has essentially an agricultural economy. So, you won't find those sophisticated dishes found elsewhere in Italy or in other European countries, but that's what I like most about Calabrian food. Simple dishes like maccheroni al pomodoro or polpette alle melanzane make your palate feel as in heaven! And the secret is really the simplicity!
Among ingredients, the real unique ones are the peperoncino, the olive oil, which, even if lesser renown than that of Tuscany, is actually one of the very best and different product of our whole country. Or, you may prefer our cold cuts, like the 'nduja or the 'ndura, which even have an acknowledgement by the European Union as high quality typical local product. I bet anyone would love to taste such delicacies! Now my mouth is watering.... :)
