One of my favorite memories from my recent roadtrip was our first night in Sandpoint, Idaho. We stopped at the advice of Lisa Gerber, who not only convinced us to stop but connected us with lodging and entertained us for the evening. You might not think of Idaho as being part of the Pacific Northwest, but they consider it so and after a few hours there you will too, especially after crossing the brown, sage-filled desert of Eastern Washington. We had a great time relaxing in our lakeside cabin, exploring downtown Sandpoint, heading out on the water and drinking excellent wine. Check out some of my favorite spots that I visited and ones that I'd like to check out on my next trip. Sandpoint, its friendly locals, and picturesque scenery won me over, I'll be heading back soon.

Sleeps Cabins: Spend an evening in one of the charming lakeside cabins at this family-run establishment. It makes he perfect retreat for relaxing, lake activities, or spending the evening by the fire. -
Holly's Place: We were desperate for coffee and this tiny cafe downtown fit the bill. -
Railroad Bridge: Sandpoint's rail history is as old as the town itself and the original rail bridge is worth a peek, but your best view will be from a boat. -
Take a boatride: The best part of Sandpoint is the lake itself. Beg, borrow or rent a boat and get out on Lake Pend Oreille. -
Forty One South Restaurant: Treat yourself to a lakeside dinner of yummy appetizers, perfectly cooked fish, and some house wine from the folks at Pend D'Oreille Winery. Don't skip dessert (like I almost did) I'm still dreaming of that key lime pie. -
Pend D'Oreille Winery: I'm admittedly a wine novice, but was thoroughly impressed both by the wine itself and its makers, Steve and Julie Meyer.

Festival at Sandpoint: An annual music festival every August. -
Laughing Dog Brewing: Next time I'll be sure to sample a local brew at this dog-friendly tap room. -
Hit the Trail: Whether by foot or on a bike, Sandpoint's beauty needs to be taken in at a slower pace. -
Pend Oreille Scenic Byway: Route 200, which runs east out of town, is the perfect drive for scenic vistas and plenty of photo ops.

I love all of Idaho, but I call Sandpoint home. It's where I feel good. I enjoy the quality of life, the friendliness and the four wonderful seasons.

If you ski, we have a great ski mountain in the winter. Come on, on a boat on the lake all summer (you didn't mention you can just boat up to 41 South and tons of other great restaurants) and on the ski mountain all winter sounds like a tough lifestyle, doesn't it? Somehow we survive it :)
